In an empty parking lot in Norman, Oklahoma, a voice recites a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke from within a white van, hidden from view. The poem – originally written in German, translated into Farsi, and broadcast to an English speaking public – reflects on the impossibility of communication and the distance created by language. As the Farsi narration echoes through a powerful amplifier, passersby hear the words but cannot see their source.
